Gianduia – Apple’s alternative to Flash

gianduia

It isn’t hidden secret that Apple is developing a Flash alternative. Infact, Apple tossed up “Gianduia” at last summer’s World of Developer Conference but hasn’t been mentioned in detailed before now. But Today, Apple Insider wrote something about an italian chocolate called “Gianduia” which is jaw breaking for flash.

Gianduia is a browser-side framework written in Java providing all rich content applications without the need for client-side plugins. Apple has already created few solid web app using Gianduia, two of them being Genius Bar reservations system and One-to-One program Internet interface.

Gianduia, named after an Italian hazelnut chocolate, is “essentially is browser-side Cocoa (including CoreData) + WebObjects, written in JavaScript by non-js-haters,” according to a tweet by developer Jonathan “Wolf” Rentzsch. Jaw dropped.

Like Cappuccino, Gianduia takes a Cocoa-inspired name (Cocoa is itself a Java-inspired name) to describe its role as a way for Cocoa developers to bring their skills to rich online applications built using web standards, with no need for a proprietary web plugin like Flash or Silverlight.

With argument of Flash vs HTML5 heating up, there is speculation that more detailed information about “Gianduia” will be unvieled at this year’s WWDC. I can’t wait to know more at the WWDC.
